Advice for First-Time Car Buyers
There's nothing better than that feeling you get when you buy your first car. It can be a very exciting time yet there's so much to think about and prepare beforehand. Everyone's experience is going to be different but the process should all be the same. We're here to offer some advice for all first-time car buyers, as you prepare to get your hands on your first set of keys.
Establish a budget and stick to it.
It's important to go in with a number in mind and be adamant to sticking with it. Keep in mind that this is going to be an investment that you are going to make. Create a list of ALL your expected allocations – loans, bills, payments, etc. – and figure out the maximum limit you can afford to spend on your vehicle while still having some money to use with leisure. The last thing you want is to get the keys for your new ride but then a couple months in having to return it.
Separate your NEEDS from your WANTS.
There are certain things that you know you want in your first vehicle, but others that are convenient yet not necessary. Although getting a vehicle with built-in 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspots or NASA approved car seats to prevent fatigue on long drives sounds amazing, all these added features are still costing you a pretty penny. If the price still isn't where you would want it to be, ask your car dealer if there's anything simpler. A good salesman will get you excited about any car, regardless; you still need to cross out certain things from your list if it's too expensive. Adding any extra features comes after you have finally negotiated to something that fits your price range.
Do your research ahead of time.
Though it may be easy to get all the answers to your questions from the car salesman, do all your research before going into the dealership. Knowledge is power. Ultimately, they want to sell the car to you but you need to make sure that the vehicle you have your eye on is reliable. Read reviews, online forums or even car guides. This is how you will find out how others feel and if there have ever been any recalls on the vehicle. If you want a vehicle that is going to last you a substantial amount of time, you need to make sure you invest time in doing research.
It doesn't have to be a one-stop shop.
Keep your options open; remember that there are plenty of other dealerships. Compare the prices, and see how far they are willing to negotiate on price. Many times, the dealer will lower the initial price one they see they are about to lose your business and walk out the door. Be patient yet persistent about the things you want with your vehicle. Note that buying a car isn't as simple as going out and buying shoes where you can quickly determine whether you like it or not and you are in and out of the shop in less than an hour. The process of buying a car is much different. If needed, take a night to think about it and digest all the information.
Take your vehicle out for a test drive.
Test out all of the features of the vehicle and try it out as if it's already yours. Taking your vehicle out for a test drive is your opportunity to evaluate the comfort, acceleration and any cool features before you give a full "yes" and commit to purchasing the vehicle.
Get Auto Insurance that you can trust on the roads.
Buying a vehicle can be notoriously tedious; getting car insurance doesn't have to be. In Texas, by law every driver must carry liability insurance. This will help cover others injured in an accident if you are at fault. It can also pay to repair or replace the other driver's damaged property.
