How to Get a Bonded Title in Texas

Getting a bonded title doesn't have to be complicated. Follow this simplified 5-step process to secure your vehicle ownership.

1. Confirm Eligibility with TxDMV

To qualify for a bonded title in Texas, you must be a Texas resident (or military stationed here) and have the vehicle in your possession. The vehicle cannot be considered junked or nonrepairable, and there cannot be any active liens less than 10 years old.

2. Submit Application to TxDMV

Visit your local TxDMV Regional Service Center to file the Bonded Title Application (Form VTR-130-SOF). You will need to bring:

  • A valid photo ID

  • The $15.00 administrative fee

  • Any proof of ownership you have (Bill of Sale, canceled check, etc.)

3. Receive Your Notice of Determination

If approved, the TxDMV will issue a Notice of Determination (Form VTR-130-ND). This critical document tells you the exact bond amount you need to purchase, which is equal to 1.5 times the vehicle's value.

4. Purchase Your Surety Bond from A-MAX

Bring your Form VTR-130-ND to any A-MAX location. We will issue your bond same-day in most cases. You have one year from the date on your notice to purchase the bond.

5. Complete the Bonded Title Application

Take your new surety bond, the Notice of Determination, and a completed Application for Texas Title and/or Registration (Form 130-U) to your county tax office to receive your bonded title.

When Do You Need a Texas Title Bond?

A title bond is essentially a safety net for the state and future buyers. You generally need one if:

  • You lost your original title and cannot contact the previous owner.

  • You bought a vehicle without a title (private sale, auction, or barn find).

  • The seller gave you an incorrect or incomplete title assignment.

  • The finance company closed before releasing the lien.

  • You inherited a vehicle but the paperwork is missing.

What Is a Bonded Title?

A bonded title acts just like a regular title, allowing you to register, insure, and drive your vehicle. The only difference is that it carries a "bonded" brand for 3 years.

This bond protects the state and any previous owners. If someone comes forward with a valid claim to the vehicle during those 3 years, the surety bond pays out to protect them (and you must reimburse the surety). If no claims are made after 3 years, the "bonded" label is removed, and you receive a standard clear title.

Common questions about Surety Bonds

Prices start at $100. Most customers pay between 1% and 3% of the total bond amount. The bond amount itself must be 1.5 times the value of your vehicle.

The initial TxDMV review of your application usually takes 1-2 weeks. Once you have your Notice of Determination, you can walk into A-MAX and get your bond in minutes, then head immediately to the county tax office.

Yes, a bonded title is valid legal proof of ownership. You can sell the vehicle, but you should disclose the bonded status to the buyer. After the 3-year term expires, the title converts to a standard title.

You will primarily need Form VTR-130-SOF (Statement of Fact) to apply, VTR-130-ND (Notice of Determination) which sets the bond amount, and Form 130-U (Application for Texas Title) to finalize the process at the county tax office.

Not necessarily. While credit scores can influence your specific rate, we work with drivers in all credit situations. Visit an A-MAX location to discuss your specific options.
