LIABILITY ONLY CAR INSURANCE
Liability car insurance pays for injuries and property damage you cause to other people in an accident that is your fault, up to the limits on your policy. It does not pay to fix your own car or treat your own injuries. Every state A-MAX serves requires it, and liability only is the least coverage you can legally carry.

The legal minimum, and what it does and does not do. Worth understanding before you pick it, because it is a floor rather than a recommendation.
LIABILITY AT A-MAX
Liability only covers injury and property damage you cause to other people. It does not cover your own car, no matter who was at fault. Every state sets a minimum, that minimum is a legal floor rather than an amount that reliably covers a serious accident, and higher limits cost less than most people expect.
WHAT DOES LIABILITY INSURANCE COVER?
WHAT IS LIABILITY CAR INSURANCE?
Liability is the part of a car insurance policy the law actually requires. It protects other people from the cost of an accident you cause, and it protects you from paying that cost out of pocket, up to your limits. People also call it auto liability insurance, automobile liability insurance, or basic liability coverage. They all mean the same thing.
HOW AUTO LIABILITY COVERAGE WORKS
Liability is written as three numbers: injury per person, injury per accident, and property damage. In Texas the minimum is 30/60/25, which means:
$30,000 for injuries to any one person you hurt.
$60,000 total for everyone you hurt in one accident.
$25,000 for damage to other people’s property, usually their car.
Those numbers are the most your insurer pays. Anything above them is yours. If you cause an accident, the other driver files a claim against your liability coverage, and your insurer pays their costs up to those limits.
The state minimum was set by a legislature, not by a body shop. A late-model car totalled in an at-fault wreck can exceed a minimum property-damage limit on its own, and the difference between minimum limits and the next step up is usually smaller than people assume. Ask what the next tier costs before defaulting to the floor.
LIABILITY ONLY VS FULL COVERAGE
Liability only pays for damage you do to others. Full coverage adds collision, which repairs your car after a crash, and comprehensive, which covers theft, fire, hail and vandalism. If your car is financed or leased, your lender will generally require both. See how full coverage car insurance compares.
WHEN DOES LIABILITY ONLY MAKE SENSE?
Liability only is often a fit when your car is paid off and worth less than what you would pay over a year or two for collision and comprehensive. If you could not afford to replace the car yourself after a crash, full coverage is usually the safer choice. Either way, the limits you pick on the liability side matter more than most people think.

No. If another driver causes the accident, their liability coverage pays for your damage. If they have no insurance or not enough, your own uninsured motorist coverage is what steps in.

It is enough to be legal. Whether it is enough to cover a serious accident is a different question, and often the answer is no. Ask what the next limit up costs.
Yes, at any point, and usually mid-term. If you finance a car you will generally have to.
