NON-OWNER CAR INSURANCE

Non-owner car insurance is a liability policy for people who drive but do not own a car. It covers injury and damage you cause while driving a borrowed or rented vehicle, and it is the usual way to meet an SR-22 requirement when you have no car. It does not cover the car you are driving.

No car, still need coverage. Usually because the state is asking for a filing, sometimes because you drive other people’s cars often enough to want your own liability.

NON OWNER AT A-MAX

Most people arrive at this page because a state agency asked for proof of insurance and they do not own a car. A non-owner policy is the answer to exactly that: it attaches liability coverage to you rather than to a vehicle, which is enough to support a filing.

It is also useful without a filing, if you regularly drive borrowed or rented cars. What it does not do is cover damage to the car you are driving, because that follows the car and belongs to whoever owns it.

WHAT IT COVERS

Liability, attached to you

For injury and damage you cause in a car you do not own.

Supports an SR-22 filing

The usual reason people need one. See SR-22 insurance.

Borrowed and rented cars

Coverage that follows the driver rather than the vehicle.

What it does not cover

Damage to the car itself. That is the owner’s policy.

Some insurance companies also let you add uninsured motorist coverage or medical payments coverage to a non-owner policy. Ask when you quote.

WHAT IS A NON-OWNERS INSURANCE POLICY?

A non-owners insurance policy covers you as a driver rather than covering a specific car. A regular auto policy is written on a vehicle and follows that vehicle. A non-owner policy is written on you and follows you into whatever car you are driving with permission.

In most cases it sits behind the car owner’s insurance. If you cause a crash in a friend’s car, the owner’s policy typically pays first, and your non-owner liability can pick up what is left, up to your own limits. If you are driving a car with no other coverage in play, your non-owner policy is what pays the other party.

NON-OWNER LIABILITY INSURANCE LIMITS BY STATE

A non-owner policy is liability insurance, so it has to meet your state’s liability minimum, and you can buy higher limits if you want more protection:

WHO NEEDS NON-OWNER CAR INSURANCE?

  • Drivers who must file an SR-22 but do not own a car. This is the most common reason.

  • People who borrow cars regularly. A friend’s or relative’s car, often enough that you want your own liability behind theirs.

  • People between cars. Keeping a non-owner policy while you are without a car can keep your insurance history continuous, and a gap in coverage can cost you when you buy again.

  • Frequent renters and car-share users. Liability that goes with you from one rental to the next.

It is usually not the right policy if you own a car or have regular use of a car in your household. Insurance companies generally expect those vehicles to be insured on their own policy, so ask before you buy.

THE THINGS PEOPLE ACTUALLY ASK US

Most often somebody who has to file an SR-22 but does not own a car. It is also worth having if you frequently drive vehicles you do not own.

Some insurance companies do and some do not, and many sell it only through agents. An independent agency like A-MAX compares the insurance companies that write it and shows you the options together.

Yes. That is exactly what a non-owner policy is: car insurance without a car. It covers your liability as a driver instead of covering a vehicle.

No. It covers your liability for injury and damage you cause. Damage to the vehicle itself is covered by the owner’s policy, or not at all.

It can cover your liability when you drive a rental. It does not pay for damage to the rental car itself, so check what the rental company or your card offers for that.

Yes, and it is the standard way to do it when you have no vehicle. We file electronically the same day the policy starts.
