Moving changes your car insurance rate because insurance companies price by ZIP code rather than by city or state. A move across town can raise or lower the premium. A move to another state usually needs a new policy written under that state minimum, not a change of address.
MOVING AT A-MAX
Rating territory is one of the largest inputs into an auto premium and it is drawn at ZIP level, so two addresses fifteen minutes apart can be priced very differently. That cuts both ways: people are as often surprised by a decrease as by an increase, and the only way to know is to run it.
A move to a different state is a bigger event than a change of address. The required minimums differ, the filing authority differs if you have an SR-22, and not every insurance company writes every state. Yes. Where the car is kept overnight is a rating factor, and a policy rated on the wrong address is the kind of discrepancy that surfaces at the worst possible moment, which is during a claim.
