Auto Insurance for College Students

Most college students do not need their own auto insurance policy. Staying on a parent’s policy is almost always cheaper, and may even unlock a distant student discount if school is more than 100 miles from home. The exception is when the student is the primary driver of a vehicle registered in their own name. At A-MAX, we help families with college-age drivers figure out the right setup, shop 35+ carriers per quote, and write standalone student policies when needed.

Key takeaways

  • Most college students should stay on a parent’s policy through graduation.
  • Distant student discount applies if school is 100+ miles from home and the student does not bring a car.
  • Discount typically saves 10 to 15 percent on the student’s portion of the premium.
  • If the student brings a car to school, the policy needs to reflect the school’s ZIP code (this can raise or lower the rate).
  • Graduating students should re-shop their insurance. The rate environment changes.

How insurance treats college students

Carriers care about three things for college-age drivers: where the car is regularly parked (the “garaging address”), how often the student drives it, and whether the student is the primary or occasional driver. A student who lives in a campus dorm without a car and only drives the family vehicle on visits home pays much less than a student who has a car at school and drives daily.

The biggest variable is the garaging address. If your student keeps a car at school in a high-theft urban ZIP, the rate goes up. If they keep a car at home and only borrow it when visiting, the rate may not change at all.

What college students need for coverage

If the student is on a parent’s policy and does not bring a car to school, the existing family coverage typically extends to them while driving any car the family owns. No separate policy needed.

If the student takes a car to school, that vehicle needs to be on the policy and the garaging address may need to change. Notify the carrier. Not doing so can create coverage problems if a claim happens.

If the student rents an apartment off-campus, renters insurance is worth getting (often $10 to $15 per month). It bundles with auto for a discount and protects personal property and liability in the rental.

How to save on college student insurance

  • Apply for the distant student discount if school is 100+ miles from home and the student is not bringing a car.
  • Maintain the student’s good student status. 3.0 GPA or B average usually qualifies.
  • If the student is at school without a car most of the year, ask about an “occasional driver” classification.
  • Bundle the student’s renters insurance (if living off-campus) with the family auto policy.
  • Re-shop coverage when the student graduates. Rates and life situation change quickly.

How A-MAX helps families with college students

A-MAX writes policies that flex with college life. Students staying on family policies, students taking cars to school in different ZIP codes, students moving back home after graduation, students studying abroad. Each of these is a different policy decision, and our agents handle them at any of our 250+ Texas and California offices.

If you have a student who is about to graduate, schedule a policy review with us about a month before graduation. We will re-quote across our carriers based on their post-graduation situation and find what works for their new life stage.

A-MAX Frequently Asked Questions

Usually no. Staying on a parent’s policy is almost always cheaper. The exception is when the student is the primary driver of a vehicle registered in their own name, or they live in a different state and need a policy issued there.

A discount carriers offer when a student attends school 100+ miles from home and does not bring a car to school. Typically saves 10 to 15 percent on the student’s portion of the family premium. Verification is usually a school enrollment letter and the school’s address.

The vehicle’s garaging address may need to change on the policy. Notify your carrier. The rate may go up or down depending on whether the school ZIP is higher or lower risk than home.

Auto insurance is state-specific. If your student attends school in a different state but the vehicle is registered to a parent in your home state, the home-state policy usually covers them. If they are moving permanently, they will need a policy in the new state.

Re-shop the policy. Their new situation (job, location, vehicle, possibly bundling with renters) changes the rate picture. A-MAX agents can re-quote in about 10 minutes.
