Short answer

Veterans qualify for discounts at most major auto insurance carriers, and some carriers offer programs specifically for active duty, reserves, and veterans. A-MAX writes coverage for veterans across our 200+ Texas and 50+ California offices, shops multiple carriers per quote to find the veteran rate that fits, and helps service members manage coverage through deployments, moves, and the transition back to civilian life.

If you only do five things

  • Most carriers offer veteran or military discounts (5 to 15 percent).

  • Some carriers have specific programs for active duty, reserves, and veterans.

  • Deployments allow for reduced coverage (storage policies) during the deployment period.

  • Moving for service changes your state of residence. May require a new policy.

  • Veterans transitioning to civilian life should re-shop their insurance at separation.

How carriers treat veterans

Most major auto insurance carriers offer some form of veteran or military discount. The size of the discount varies (5 to 15 percent is typical), and some carriers offer dedicated programs with broader benefits. USAA is the most famous example, but most carriers in A-MAX’s panel have at least a basic veteran discount.

What matters: making sure your veteran status is documented on your policy. Carriers do not apply the discount automatically. You have to claim it. We will ask about military or veteran status when quoting and apply the relevant discounts.

Coverage situations specific to veterans and active duty

Deployment changes coverage needs. If you are deploying and storing your vehicle, you may be able to switch to a storage-only policy (comprehensive coverage with no liability or collision) for the deployment period. This typically cuts premiums by 50 to 70 percent. When you return, restore full coverage.

Out-of-state assignments. Auto insurance is state-regulated. If you are reassigned out of state, you may need a new policy issued in your new state of residence. Some carriers handle this seamlessly; others require a full policy change.

Transitioning to civilian life. Separation from service is a re-shopping moment. Your rate environment changes. Employer affinity programs go away, the state you live in may change, your annual mileage may change. Re-quote at separation rather than continuing on autopilot.

How veterans save on auto insurance

  • Claim every veteran or military discount your carrier offers.

  • Switch to storage-only coverage during deployments if applicable.

  • Apply for any employer-affinity discounts at your post-service civilian job.

  • Re-shop at separation. Your situation has changed enough to warrant new quotes.

  • Bundle with homeowners or renters insurance.

  • Set up autopay (most carriers offer a small discount).

  • Take a defensive driving course if not already on your policy.

What veteran discounts can I get on auto insurance?

Most carriers offer a 5 to 15 percent veteran or military discount. Some carriers have dedicated programs (USAA is the most well-known) with broader benefits. A-MAX shops carriers including ones with strong veteran programs and applies every discount you qualify for.

How does insurance work during deployment?

Many carriers allow you to switch to a storage-only policy during deployment, which keeps comprehensive coverage on the vehicle but drops liability and collision. This typically cuts premiums 50 to 70 percent. When you return, restore full coverage.

Should I keep my insurance active if I am deployed overseas?

If your vehicle is stored at a relative’s house or in a storage facility, a storage-only policy maintains coverage cheaply. If the vehicle will not be driven at all, some carriers allow a temporary suspension. Talk to A-MAX about the options for your specific situation.

Do I need to change my insurance when I leave the military?

Re-shopping at separation almost always makes sense. Your address may change, your employer changes, your annual mileage may change, and certain military-only discounts may go away while civilian discounts become available.

Does A-MAX offer veteran discounts?

A-MAX is an independent agency, so we do not set discounts directly. We apply the discounts that the carriers we represent offer. Most of our carriers have veteran discounts, and we apply every discount you qualify for when shopping your quote.
