Short answer

Drinking, texting and driving without insurance can each turn a fun night into a costly mess. Without coverage, a crash can leave you paying for all the damage yourself, plus fines. A DUI can also mean you need an SR-22. Celebrate safely: plan your ride home and keep your coverage active.

Happy Cinco de Mayo! This is usually where we'd remind you to party responsibly, but we have a cautionary tale to tell instead.

What happened to Paul?

Meet Paul, a regular at a bar who finally works up the courage to talk to a woman he likes after a few too many tequila shots. They trade numbers, and with top-shelf tequila costing what it does these days, Paul decides it's best for his wallet to head home. Paul is in no condition to drive, but he ignores his better judgment and gets behind the wheel anyway.

As he's pulling out of the parking lot, Paul gets a text from the woman he just met. Excited to answer, he takes his eyes off the road, and BAM! He crashes into another car. The whole bar comes out to see what happened, including her. Needless to say, Paul never hears from her again. Who wants to date an irresponsible driver?

What happens if you crash without insurance?

Paul thought he couldn't afford both his tequila and his car insurance, so he had no coverage when he crashed. That meant he had to pay for all the damage himself, and he got hit with a big fine for driving without insurance. If Paul had known A-MAX could help him find coverage that fit his needs and budget, he could have spared himself a lot of trouble.

What is an SR-22, and when do you need one?

We hope you never need one, but A-MAX offers SR-22 filings, usually the same day. An SR-22 is a certificate your insurance company files with the state to show you carry the required coverage. It's often required after serious violations like a DUI.

Keep in mind that drivers who need an SR-22 usually pay more for coverage, and you may have to keep it for a few years (often around three, depending on your state and your case). On top of risking your life, you could be paying for one bad decision for years.

How can you celebrate safely?

  • Plan your ride home before the first drink: a sober friend, a ride-share app, a taxi or public transit
  • If you've been drinking, don't drive. Period.
  • Put your phone away while you drive. That text can wait.
  • Keep your car insurance active, even when money is tight

The moral of the story is simple: don't be like Paul. As much as we love a good time, nothing is worth risking your life or someone else's on the road. Cheers to a fun and safe Cinco de Mayo!

It depends on your state and your case, but it's often around three years. Letting your coverage lapse during that time can restart the clock or lead to a suspension, so keep your policy active the whole time.

Yes. Reading or sending a text takes your eyes off the road, your hands off the wheel and your mind off driving. Even a few seconds is enough to miss a car stopping in front of you. Put the phone away until you park.

Yes. A DUI can raise your rate and may require an SR-22, but you can still get covered. A-MAX works with drivers after a DUI and can file your SR-22, usually the same day.
