Short answer

Mexico tourist auto insurance is a policy from a Mexican insurance company that covers you while you drive in Mexico. Mexican law requires liability coverage from an insurer authorized in Mexico, and most U.S. policies do not provide it. Buy it before you cross. You can get it for a single day or for a longer trip.

Visiting family or taking a trip south of the border? At A-MAX, we help drivers in Texas, California and Arizona get Mexico tourist coverage before they cross, in English or Spanish.

1. Why doesn't your U.S. policy cover you in Mexico?

Mexico generally does not recognize U.S. liability insurance. Some U.S. policies extend limited coverage for your own car a short distance past the border, but they do not meet Mexico's liability requirement. If you cause an accident without Mexican liability coverage, you can face serious legal trouble, and the U.S. State Department warns you may be held until fault and payment are settled.

2. What does Mexico tourist auto insurance cover?

COVERAGEWHAT IT DOESREQUIRED IN MEXICO?
LiabilityPays for injuries and damage you cause to others in MexicoYes
Physical damage and theftPays to repair or replace your carNo, but recommended for newer cars
Medical paymentsHelps with medical bills for you and your passengersNo
Legal assistanceHelps with legal help and bail after an accidentNo, but highly recommended
Roadside assistanceTowing and breakdown help in MexicoNo

3. What do you need to buy it?

  • Your driver's license.

  • Your vehicle registration and VIN.

  • Your travel dates and destination.

  • If your car is financed or leased, ask your lender whether you need permission to take it into Mexico.

If you drive past the border zone, you may also need a temporary vehicle import permit from Banjercito. That is separate from insurance.

4. What should you do after an accident in Mexico?

  • Stay at the scene and make sure everyone is safe.

  • Call your Mexican insurance company's claims number right away, before you agree to anything.

  • Keep your policy documents with you in the car.

  • Wait for the insurance adjuster before making any agreement or payment.

5. How does A-MAX help?

We help you pick Mexico tourist coverage for the length of your trip, from one day to longer stays, and explain each coverage in plain language. Many A-MAX offices are in border communities, and our agents speak Spanish.
