What is an SR-22? How it works and how to get one
Short answer
An SR-22 is not insurance. It is a form your insurance company files with the state to prove you carry at least the required liability coverage. States usually require one after a DUI, driving uninsured or a license suspension. You keep it on file for a set time, often 2 to 3 years.
Being told you need an SR-22 can feel overwhelming. It does not have to be. At A-MAX, SR-22 filings are part of what we do every day, and we file it for you, usually the same day.
1. What is an SR-22, exactly?
An SR-22 is a certificate of financial responsibility. Your insurance company sends it to the state to confirm you have an active auto policy that meets the state's minimum liability limits.
If your policy cancels or lapses while the SR-22 is required, the insurer must tell the state. That can lead to your license being suspended again, so keeping the policy active is the most important part.
2. Why would you need an SR-22?
A court or the state usually orders an SR-22 after events like these:
A DUI or DWI conviction.
Driving without insurance, or an accident while uninsured.
A suspended or revoked license that you want reinstated.
Too many tickets or points in a short time.
Unpaid judgments from an accident.
Whatever got you here, you are more than a driving record. The goal now is getting you legal and back on the road.
3. How long do you need an SR-22 in Texas, California and Arizona?
| STATE | WHERE IT IS FILED | HOW LONG IT IS USUALLY REQUIRED |
|---|---|---|
| Texas | Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) | Usually 2 years |
| California | California DMV | Usually 3 years |
| Arizona | Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) | Usually 3 years |
Your court order or state notice tells you the exact period that applies to you. The clock can restart if your coverage lapses, so set up payments you can keep up with.
4. What if you do not own a car?
You can still meet an SR-22 requirement with a non-owner car insurance policy. It gives you liability coverage when you drive a car you do not own, and the insurer files the SR-22 the same way.
5. How does A-MAX help with an SR-22?
We shop multiple insurance companies that accept SR-22 drivers, so you see real options.
We file the SR-22 for you, usually the same day.
We help you pick a payment plan you can keep, so your filing stays active.

The bottom line
An SR-22 is proof of insurance that your insurer files with the state, not a separate type of coverage. Keep the policy active for the whole required period and you are on your way back to a clean start. See our SR-22 insurance page for options in your state.
