Short answer

Texas minimum car insurance is 30/60/25 liability: $30,000 for injuries per person, $60,000 per accident and $25,000 for property damage. It pays for damage you cause to others, not your own car. PIP is included unless you reject it in writing.

Texas law requires every driver to carry minimum liability car insurance of 30/60/25. That is the least coverage you can legally drive with. It protects other people when an accident is your fault. It does not pay to fix your own car.

Do I need PIP or uninsured motorist coverage in Texas?

Every Texas auto policy includes personal injury protection (PIP). It pays medical bills and some lost wages for you and your passengers, no matter who caused the accident. If you do not want it, you must reject it in writing.

Your agent will also offer uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage. It helps if you are hit by a driver with no insurance or not enough insurance. It is your choice, so ask what it would add to your price before you decide.

What does minimum liability insurance not cover?

A 30/60/25 policy only pays other people. It does not pay for:

  • Repairs to your own car after an accident you cause
  • Theft, hail, flooding or vandalism to your car
  • Costs above your limits. If damages go past $30,000, $60,000 or $25,000, you may have to pay the rest yourself
  • Towing or a rental car, unless you add those coverages

To protect your own car, look at full coverage vs. liability only. If your car is financed or leased, your lender usually requires collision and comprehensive.

What happens if you drive without insurance in Texas?

Texas checks insurance through its statewide verification system, so an officer can see whether your car is insured. Driving without at least minimum coverage can lead to:

  • Fines that go up with each offense
  • Your driver license being suspended
  • Your car being impounded
  • Being required to file an SR-22 to get your license back

Is minimum coverage enough?

Minimum coverage keeps you legal and usually costs the least. It can be a good fit if you drive an older car you could replace, or you need to get covered today on a tight budget.

Higher limits are worth a look if you have savings or a home to protect, drive a newer car, or carry passengers often. A serious accident can cost far more than $30,000. An A-MAX agent can show you prices for both side by side, so you can decide.
